Warning for young want to be models

22 07 2008

Just wanted to type up a quick note while I had a chance. I was speaking to a friend of mine today who has a 15 year old daughter, who is interested in doing modelling. She told me that her daughter had found the number of a photographer on a wall at school and had phoned him for a portfolio shoot.

What really concerned me was the fact that he seemed quite happy to let her come on her own without a parent and even offered to send a taxi round to fetch. Luckily my friend got to hear about it and put a stop to the shoot, and came to chat to me about it.

So I thought I would give out a few pointers, for parents wanting to get a portfolio done for their child.

1) Always insist on being at the shoot. Personally I won’t photograph any minors without a parent present.

2) Don’t believe the photographer if they say that they are able to get your child lots of work. Most of the time the photographer will do the portfolio and the parent will have to submit it to agencies. On some occasions photographers will have working relationships with agencies but even if that is the case, they won’t be the ones choosing the models.

3) Be wary of people who don’t have there own studio or a portfolio of their work that you can see. Any photographer worth their salt will bemore than happy to meet with you before the shoot to chat.

Hope this clears things up a little. I think that you just have to use common sense.
